Been on a trip to KMART lately? Oh how hard it is to get out of their without a trolley full of plastic junk! Try trawling a toddler down the aisles of shiny, colourful plastic pots of bath paints and playdough (not to mention bubbles) and leaving without anything – virtually impossible!
But the truth is, a lot of those paints, bath paints and bubbles can be created at home with very few ingredients – and you can leave the plastic (and the questionable ingredients) in the store.
Why not try creating your own bath paints? They work a treat – and you’ll feel better knowing that they are made from normal, non-toxic ingredients, especially when your child ends up bathing in a sea of paint for an hour!
These DIY bath paints use normal store bought food colouring, but your local bulk food store may have alternative natural dyes – or you can use the below to colour your paints naturally:
- Yellow – use a pinch of Turmeric
- Purple/pink – use a teaspoon of beetroot juice
- Green – use some mint which you have pounded in the mortar and pestle
- Red – use a pinch of paprika
- Blue/purple – use the juice from some frozen defrosted blueberries
Of course – after your DIY Paint bath, you may have to throw them in the shower for a hose off!
***never leave children unattended in a bath tub – no matter what the depth of water.
Simply mix the ingredients – a 6 hole muffin tin is great for this activity and allows your child to be involved in the mixing process (or not – depending on how messy you want the experience to be!!) you could always mix these in the bathroom to eliminate more mess.
It also helps to have a bath caddy – or something to rest the paints on while the little creator lets loose on the bathroom tiles!
WARNING: these paints are only suitable for use on tiles and tubs and may stain your walls and child if too much colour is used.
- 1 TBS Cornflour
- 4-5 squirts baby wash or castile soap
- 1-2 drops food colouring (don’t over colour or it will stain your child!!)
- OR food colour alternatives like turmeric, paprika, charcoal, beetroot juice,
Mix cornflour and baby wash together (ingredients above will make enough for 1) then ad a drop or two of food colouring. Repeat 6 times to suit!
Set your child up in the bath and let them loose!*
*always monitor your child in the bath at all times.
