If you’ve got a pregnant friend, and not sure what to get her, then we’ve got the perfect gift which is plastic free & home made – DIY Lactation Cookies in a Jar. Pair this with a couple of lovingly picked items such as a wood teething toy and home made bottom balm (recipe to come) for a lovely, thoughtful gift for a new mum.
One of the most difficult things about being a new parent is all of the unknowns. Not knowing if you’ll need the plethora of fancy contraptions that the baby shops (and all shops for that matter) keep advertising to you. In the end, it does not matter if you get the basic pram or the rolls Royce of prams, this baby is going to test your ultimate limits.
Of course, from a sustainability standpoint, we recommend putting off purchasing too many items until the baby comes along, as like many new parents, you’ll find that many items are unneeded, and there will be a few things you had not thought of at all which ultimately become a necessity.
When we had our little bub 4 years ago (not so little now – she’s running the house!), one of the surprise issues I had was with milk supply. I was adamant that breastfeeding was the way for me (and it’s not possible for all women – feeding your baby any which way, is the best way forward), and was willing to persist through the ups and downs of those early days (hello bleeding nipples).
So, in the first two weeks I was madly trying to increase my milk supply. Pumping and feeding, pumping and feeding. But I also started looking at foods I could eat to increase my milk supply. Among the items which increase milk supply are oats, brewers yeast and flax seed or flax oil. I didn’t fancy eating these as part of a smoothie, but I could definitely eat some delicious choc chip lactation cookies!
Lately, there’s been a lot of beautiful friends of mine getting pregnant and having baby showers. I’ve had to really think about what gift I could give them which fit the Sustainable Families Australia aims, but was still useful and lovely. Since these lactation cookies were one of the most useful items for me in those early days, I decided to convert the recipe into a ‘jar recipe’ which I could gift to the new mums.
And now I’m happy to share it with you, along with a free printable recipe card which you can affix as a label or attach as a gift tag.
If you gift these to a friend, make sure to snap a pic and tag us on Instagram or facebook to let us know!
